The democratic crisis is no longer confined to just Eastern Europe. Authoritarian and extremist parties are gaining strength all across the continent. They share a goal, similar to Hungary or Poland, of profoundly changing the political and legal structure of their respective countries. Instead of the “United States of Europe” there is increasingly talk of a “Europe of fatherlands” – driven by fantasies of isolation and national chauvinism. How can we deal with the evil spirit of the new nationalism and anti-democracy? To what extent does this trend also carry a hostility towards modernity? Where is the role of film in this? Should it position itself clearly – despite the risk of complicity?

Zum Glück fallen da einem Martin Kippenberger und seine Hetzler-Boys ein, die enfants terribles der deutschen Kunstszene in den Achtzigern, das waren noch echte Kerle; von denen kann man was lernen. Alle sind sie zu uns ins unterirdische Studio Agi gekommen, wo dieser Film gedreht wurde, um zu erzählen, was wirklich passiert ist mit der deutschen Männlichkeit; Kippenbergers alte Weggefährten, Kippi selbst, Helmut Kohl, Janet Jackson und Tante Käthe – und schließlich sogar der echte Björn Höcke.
